Every platform wants
its own icon
16 & 32 - browser tabs
The classic favicon. Tiny, so simple shapes and strong contrast survive; fine detail turns to mush.
48 - Windows & Google
Google shows favicons next to search results and prefers a multiple of 48px - this one earns its slot.
180 - iPhone home screen
The apple-touch-icon. iOS flattens transparency to black, so this one is exported on your chosen background.
192 & 512 - Android
Home screen and splash-screen sizes, declared in the web app manifest rather than a link tag.
Maskable 512
Android crops icons into circles and squircles. The maskable version keeps your logo in the 80% safe zone so nothing gets clipped.
The link tags & manifest
Files alone do nothing - the head tags and site.webmanifest tell browsers each icon exists. Both are generated for you.
Favicon questions everyone asks
What favicon sizes do I need in 2026?
A practical modern pack is: 16x16 and 32x32 PNG for browser tabs, 48x48 for Windows and Google search results, 180x180 for the apple-touch-icon iPhones use on the home screen, and 192x192 plus 512x512 for Android and your web app manifest - ideally with a 512 maskable version. One good square source image, 512px or larger, covers all of it.
Why does my favicon look black on iPhone?
Because iOS does not support transparency in the apple-touch-icon - any transparent pixels are flattened to solid black when the icon is saved to a home screen. The fix is to flatten the icon onto a background color yourself (white, or your brand color) before exporting, which is exactly what this tool does for the 180x180 file.
What is a maskable icon?
An Android icon designed to survive being cropped into a circle, squircle or rounded square - each phone maker picks its own shape. The rule of thumb: your logo must fit inside a safe zone circle covering 80% of the image, with the outer edge filled by a solid background rather than transparency. Declared in the manifest with "purpose": "maskable".
